Vernal Falls

If you hike approximately 8 tenths of one mile, (1.2 km), you will reach a bridge crossing the Merced River which will provide you with this exquisite view of Vernal Falls.  Dropping over 300 feet, it creates a thunderously loud roar, beautiful rainbows, and the reason for the aptly named Mist Trail.  If the Mist Trail is open, you can continue along the south (or right hand) side of the Merced River, up the granite steps to the top of the waterfall.  Be prepared to get very wet going up or down the Mist Trail; careful, it can be very slippery in either direction.

At the top of Vernal Falls are huge granite slabs, perfect for soaking up the sun and having a picnic.  Do not stray into the water above the falls, the current is swifter than it looks and you can easily be swept over the edge.  Instead, enjoy a walk up the river to the next bridge and enjoy a view where the Merced River cascades through a narrow gorge under a bridge and safely beneath your feet.
